Super Expo-sciences Hydro-Québec, Quebec Final 2018 - GABRIEL DAYAN WON FIRST PLACE

Shawinigan, April 21th, 2018 - Gabriel Dayan, a student at Marianopolis College in Montreal, won top honors at the Hydro-Québec 2018 Super Expo-Sciences. He was awarded the Hydro-Québec First Prize with a 1500$ cash award and a trip to the James Bay. Gabriel has already won the Hydro-Québec First Prize at the Hydro-Québec Super Expo-Sciences in 2014.

His project entitled « An Immune Response to All » is based on some properties of the immune system that might be useful to fight cancer. He based his project on a technique developped by Dr. Carl H June (2012) that proposes an innovative model of immunotherapy. Dr. June’s system proposes to collect immune cells from a patient with leukemia. Once genetically modified, these cells are reinjected in the patient where they will act against the cancer cells. Gabriel and his scientific supervisor, Dr. Elie Haddad of the CHU Ste-Justine, proposed a new model based on the work of Dr. June. In this model, cells injected to patients have the ability to self-regenerate thus preventing the need for constant injections. Gabriel Dayan’s work thus provides us with a better understanding of the potential uses of immunotherapy in cancer research.

In addition to the Hydro-Québec First Prize, Gabriel was also awarded the following prizes:

• Médaille du Réseau Technoscience - Or Senior - 500 $
• Participation à l’Expo-sciences pancanadienne 2018 à Ottawa

The hard work of many other participants was also rewarded at the award ceremony, where nearly 250 000 $ in cash prizes, bursaries and participations in higher fairs, were handed out. In addition, 36 of these students were selected to make up the Quebec delegation for the Canada-Wide Science Fair, in Ottawa. For exhibitors were also selected to participate at the Expo-sciences of Clermand-Ferrand in Auvergne in France.
